Rivals: A Friendly Handwritten Font

There I was, staring at a blank brand board, trying to find the right tone for a new boutique coffee shop. The client wanted something warm, approachable, and a little bit quirky. I scrolled through my font library, but nothing felt quite right. That’s when I pulled out Rivals, a friendly handwritten font that had been sitting in my collection for a while. It didn’t take long to realize why this font is quickly becoming a favorite among designers.

What Makes Rivals Stand Out

Rivals has a soft, natural feel that feels like it was written by hand. The strokes are gentle, with subtle variations that give it character without being too ornate. It’s not overly stylized, which makes it versatile for a wide range of projects. The font has a relaxed personality, making it perfect for brands that want to feel personal and authentic.

The visual style of Rivals is clean yet expressive. It works well as a display font, adding a human touch to headlines and logos. But what really sets it apart is how it maintains readability even when used in larger sizes. It doesn’t sacrifice clarity for charm, which is a big plus for designers looking for a balance between style and function.

Testing Rivals in Real Branding Projects

I first tested Rivals on a logo concept for the coffee shop. The font brought a sense of warmth and familiarity, which aligned perfectly with the brand’s vision. When paired with a simple sans serif for the tagline, it created a nice contrast that made the logo feel modern yet inviting.

Next, I tried it on a packaging mockup. The font looked great on labels and product boxes, adding a handmade quality that felt genuine. It worked especially well on small details like ingredient lists or special notes, where a more formal typeface might feel out of place.

On a business card, Rivals gave the design a personal touch. It wasn’t too flashy, but it stood out enough to make an impression. When used on a website header, it added a unique flair without overwhelming the layout. It also performed well on social media graphics, where its friendly nature helped engage audiences.

When Rivals Shines and When It Doesn’t

Rivals excels as a display or headline font. It’s ideal for logos, branding elements, and short phrases where a human touch is needed. It can also be used as an accent font to add personality to a design system. However, it’s not the best choice for long body text or formal corporate projects. In smaller sizes, the font can become less legible, and in a professional setting, it may not convey the level of seriousness required.

For projects that need a more structured or traditional look, Rivals might not be the right fit. It’s best suited for creative, lifestyle, or artisanal brands that value a personal and approachable aesthetic. If you’re working on something that requires a high level of formality, you might want to pair Rivals with a serif or sans serif font for balance.

Pairing Rivals with Other Fonts

One of the strengths of Rivals is how well it pairs with other fonts. When used alongside a clean sans serif, it creates a nice contrast that keeps the design from feeling too casual. Pairing it with a serif font can add a classic touch, making it suitable for more refined projects.

If you're working with a modern typography system, Rivals can serve as a complementary element. It adds a human element to otherwise rigid layouts, making them feel more engaging. For a more cohesive look, consider using it with another handwritten or script font, but be mindful of not overcomplicating the design.

Practical Tips for Using Rivals

Before using Rivals in final client work, it’s a good idea to test it in different contexts. Try it on various surfaces—print, digital, and signage—to see how it performs. Pay attention to how it looks in different sizes and under different lighting conditions.

Also, check the font’s licensing terms. Make sure it’s suitable for commercial use, especially if you’re planning to use it in client projects, merchandise, or print-on-demand products. Some fonts have restrictions that could limit your ability to use them in certain ways.

If you’re unsure about how Rivals will look in a specific project, create a quick mockup or prototype. This allows you to visualize the final result before committing to the design. It’s always better to test and adjust than to rush into a decision that could affect the overall brand perception.
